We are constantly in transit – moving through spaces – with too many other concerns to spend much time reflecting on where we are, where we have come from, and where we are going. When we do reflect on our surroundings, we acquire the sense of a place largely through visual perception.

But our place-sense is also highly dependent on the self-sound of a site, of which we have a much lower consciousness. Perhaps an intuitive grasp of the trace resonances present in any space is all that most experience.

But this acoustic resonance of spaces, though under-explored in everyday life, is never-the-less a key to our tactile sense of the actuality of a place. The IN TRANSIT sound installation examines the site resonance under the shifing lights of the dome in the atrium of the InterContinental Hotel – Chicago.

Here the rarified resonance of the site, extracted from a recording of room tone is amplified and constructed into a multi-channel sound work. By returning the tuned, self-sounds to the space, an enhanced sense of place is made available as the aural identity of the site is brought forward.

The InterContinental Hotel is a perfect site to find people in transit and to examine the effects of constant motion on our abilities to perceive. As a principle of formal design, IN TRANSIT also literally explores the motion of sound through the atrium, the intention being to enhance the experience, if only briefly, of a notable architectural space and its self-reflexive site-sound.
