SOUND MASS
8-channel sound installation, duration 23 min 20 sec
The resonance of the cathedral of Cologne, Germany is featured in this installation, which investigates senses of sonic architectural engagement.
Extracted from silence (room tone), the sonic "presence" of the Gothic cathedral is enhanced as it is transformed into an atmospheric sound field. breath-sky
1-channel video installation, stereo sound, duration: 6 min 2 sec
While shooting video in the cathedral in late winter my breath was always visible. I recorded the sound of my breathing in the cathedral and video taped the white plumes of breath. Later I decided that the breath was better served "freed" from interior space, and so framed it with only the sky as backdrop.
I then analyzed the sound of my breathing for resonance, extracted it from the other breath sounds and created a stereo sound track that completes the installation. breath-sky punctuates the SOUND MASS installation and eventually enters the SOUND MASS audio tracks as the breath resonance takes over the other installation, though it later yields to the former slow pulse it previously kept.
Another video installtion, breath-stone,features the breath against a backdrop of sheer black granite. ENDLESS COLUMNS
7-channel video installation, duration: 23 min 20 sec
This installation explores visual architectural engagement as the typical gesture of looking up a cathedral column is examined.
Each small monitor carries a different program of continual panning up the columns of the cathedral of Cologne. As the top of a column arrives on screen it dissolves into a column base that repeats the cycle.
The projection features 2 to 5 simultaneous transparencies of similar panning up the columns. Different perspectives and panning rates occur simultaneoulsy in the video as an abstract program of gesture emerges.
