In October 2004 VOLUMINA EX-CATHEDRAL was installed in the cathedral square as the City of Cologne's official celebratory event in recognition of the Art Cologne Festival.
For another city event the following summer, World Youth Days, I prepared a new 5-channel verision of this installation. The more intimate indoor setting and the opportunity to better experience the installation, freed from the extraneous noise of the highly trafficked cathedral square, allow for a more nuanced work. This new version, VOLUMINA-X addresses these factors as it features a wider dynamic range and a more subtle handling of the sonic materials.
The title refers to the volumes (masses) of sound that are always present in the silence of the cathedral, and to their relocation -- ex-cathedral.
